A Brief History into Hydroponics
|
Although Hydroponic
gardens appear to be a new concept, the technique actually originated centuries ago.
Hieroglyphics in Egypt shows their culture grew plants in water and not soil. Other areas of
the world also indicate they used this method for gardening.
Historic Gardens
There are many
examples of hydroponics that have unearthed themselves throughout history (pun not
intended). The term hydroponics is
derived from the Greek language, meaning "water working". General
Hydroponics is a form of growing plants without the necessity of soil or
sunlight. Instead the plant grows inside using artificial lights and grows in a nutrient rich
solution. The most common medium of choice in
the past has been water. This has been seen throughout history through many cultures
including the Aztecs, Mexiacans, Chinese and even Babylon, as evidences by the hanging
gardens of Babylon. While this water growing method has been very popular for a number of
cultures and civilizations, hydroponics has come a long way since then.
Over the last
century, scientists revealed the many benefits general hydroponics can provide. A hydroponic system could help
countries grow crops to feed their people even when the soil of their land is not suitable.
This method of gardening provides larger crops with fewer pests to deal with. It is also
allows farmers to grow larger crops in a much smaller area, which is a major benefit to
overcrowded cities with little open space available for crops.
In the 1970's,
scientists made a great stride in the hydroponics world, by introducing a viable way to plant
and grow successful commercial crops by this method. This allowed them to feed many people in
a single location, even if the conditions were not the best for farming. Experts begun to
realize that hydroponics might be the answer to saving the environment as well as feeding
larger populations more effectively and efficiently.
Today
Nowadays, general
hydroponics is available to everyday people, it’s no longer limited to scientists and
agricultural experts. Many gardening hobbyists have also realized the many benefits of growing
plants and crops by this method. Now you can find instructions on how to create your very own
hydroponic gardening system at home with very little capital required. Once you collect the
basic information about hydroponics and how you can build your own system, you will be on your
way to growing crops in a fun and beneficial way. Here is ashort clip we found online on how
to build your own hydroponic growing system.

Benefits
of Hydroponics:
When there is a scarcity of land or the soil is just not plant
worthy, General Hydroponics makes a worthwhile and profitable
alternative for farmers. Here are some benefits below:
- No need to soil plough or tilling
- Don't need to worry about soil-borne diseases and weeds
- Despite using water as its base, hydroponics actually uses less water than
traditional farming
- Can be set up in small locations
- YOU can control the environmental conditions, no more droughts or
floods!
- Excellent "bang for your buck", you can grow bucket loads of produce in a
confined space
- Low maintenance, once set up, you only need to add nutrients when
necessary
- and best of all, you can grow your fruits and veggie's all year round!
